It's been well over a year since we last cut Ben's hair, and it was getting huge. It still looked fine, but he absolutely hates having his hair done. That has meant tears nearly every morning as we tried to work out the tangles. So cute or not, we decided it was time for the afro to go.
The before shot:
He wailed the whole time Eric trimmed it. He was sobbing by the time it was all gone. When Eric was finished, I picked him up so he could see his new do in the mirror. That's when the pouting started.
He put his hand up to his head and tried to pull out the curls - but they were gone.
"Do you like your new haircut, Ben?" I asked.
"No!" he said.
"Why not?"
"I want my hair on!" he wailed, pointing at the trashcan full of the fluff from his head.
"But you look so handsome," I said.
"No! I want my hair on!"
And so, as always, I went to get the camera. Pay attention to the very end, where Ben offers his own suggestion for rectifying the injustice he's had to endure. (Sorry it's sideways; I forgot we don't actually have the video editing software required to flip it. Oops.)
Poor boy! It doesn't even look that different in these pictures, but that's because of how very curly his hair actually is. Eric took off at least two, possibly three inches of hair, but it's so tightly curled, it's hard to tell. Trust us, though, it is so much shorter, and so much nicer to do in the morning.
It's been two days, and he still claims that he wants his hair on, though he's not nearly as pouty. It's a loss, to be sure, but I think he'll recover. We should have confirmation of his recovery (or lack thereof) in about thirty years when he's telling his therapist about the time his parents took his hair off!

Ahhh! He looks so sad about his hair. And the looks he gives Eric are just melting your heart!
